Clean Power-to-Gas fuel production and CO2-free district heating plant planned in Kotka
Nordic Ren-Gas Oy is developing a Power-to-Gas project in Kotka. The goal of the project is to build a production facility that produces renewable e-methane, hydrogen, and district heating from excess heat from the process.
The project is developed in a close co-operation with Kotkan Energia. Carbon dioxide is captured from Kotkan Energia Waste-to-Energy plant and transported to the e-methane plant in Mussalo, Palaslahti industrial area. The facility will be completed in phases, and the production of the first phase is planned to start in 2029. In the extension phase, the production capacity of the plant will be doubled.
The production of the renewable e-methane, hydrogen and district heating produced from process waste heat, is based on a carbon neutral fuel cycle. The project consists of a technology complex that includes hydrogen production, methane production, further processing of methane, as well as heat production with auxiliary equipment, integrations and buildings.
Ren-Gas is the leading hydrogen economy developer in Finland, promoting the establishment of a decentralized renewable e-methane production network throughout the country. The renewable fuels produced by Ren-Gas will significantly reduce the reliance on fossil fuels in heavy road and maritime transportation, saving up to 250 million litres fossil fuel use annually. Ren-Gas’ projects will reduce carbon dioxide emissions within the transportation and energy sectors in total by over one million tons annually.
To achieve this goal, Ren-Gas is actively developing a production portfolio capable of producing e-methane for up to 8000 trucks. Ren-Gas will source Finnish wind power for the e-methane production, which will significantly support the expansion of wind power in Finland. Furthermore, thanks to its flexibility, the portfolio’s approximately 800 MW of electrolyzer capacity will adapt to the needs of the electricity system, increasing demand flexibility in the Finnish electricity grid.
