About Ren-Gas
Ren-Gas is a renewable energy producer. We are accelerating Europe’s cost-effective transition to renewable fuels by building a distributed renewable e-methane production network in Finland.
What is Ren-Gas?
Ren-Gas was founded in 2021 in Espoo, Finland, by a team of energy visionaries who saw an opportunity to accelerate the green transition in sectors that are notoriously hard to decarbonise: heavy transport and maritime industries.
The idea was born after its founders, including Saara Kujala and Matti Rautkivi, considered writing another book on renewable energy but realised the real impact would come from action rather than words. They decided to create a company that would pioneer the P2G industry in Finland.
The journey began with seed funding from Ilkka Herlin, a respected Finnish investor, enabling Ren-Gas to assemble a team of top experts in power-to-X technologies, energy system integration and project financing.
By early 2022, Ren-Gas signed its first major co-operation agreement with Lahti Energia for a Power-to-Gas plant, followed by similar agreements with municipal energy companies in Mikkeli, Tampere, Kotka and Pori. These partnerships marked the rapid scaling of Ren-Gas operations and its commitment to sector integration.
In late 2022, Ren-Gas reached a pivotal milestone when Allianz Capital Partners invested into the company, marking Allianz’s first direct global investment in the hydrogen sector. This strategic partnership followed months of due diligence, during which Allianz analysed over 100 companies in the hydrogen space before selecting Ren-Gas for its well-structured projects and exceptional team. The investment not only validated Ren-Gas’ concept but also accelerated its growth trajectory, enabling the development of a decentralized portfolio of power-to-gas plants across Finland and laying the foundation for future expansion in Europe.
Our vision
Ren-Gas is solution-driven and aims to accelerate cost-effective decarbonisation in the transport and energy sectors. Its mission is clear: to build a decentralised Power-to-Gas production network that delivers renewable e-methane for heavy transport and industry, CO₂-free heat for district heating and demand response services for grid operators. Ren-Gas plans to produce 2.5 TWh of renewable gaseous fuels, equivalent to replacing 250 million litres of fossil diesel annually, and to establish a scalable platform for the hydrogen economy across Europe.
The company’s vision extends beyond fuel production. Ren-Gas seeks to create a green hydrogen network that generates value across the entire value chain, from technology providers to end users. Its approach is grounded in analytical, fact-based decision-making, ensuring efficient project development in a new and evolving industry.
