Ren-Gas delivers RFNBO-compliant e-methane from Finland, combining EU regulation know-how, proven technology and strong local conditions into one competitive solution for European gas offtakers.

EU regulation and RFNBO fuels

The European Union has established ambitious climate targets to accelerate the transition towards a sustainable, low-carbon future. Targets for 2030 include a high share of renewables in energy supply and specific obligations for transport, marine and industry. The regulations implemented by the EU are not merely aspirational: they combine strict mandates with incentives, ensuring that the energy transition is both encouraged and enforced.

To reach these goals, we need Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin or RFNBOs. These fuels are made with renewable electricity and captured CO₂, and must deliver verifiable CO₂ reductions to qualify. RFNBOs are scalable, sustainable, and essential for sectors where conventional solutions cannot deliver the required emission reductions.

From 2030, RFNBOs will have mandatory shares in both transport fuels (1%) and hydrogen used by industry (42%), creating a rapidly growing market with limited supply.

For energy buyers, RFNBOs are now central to compliance, risk management and long-term competitiveness. Early movers can secure volumes, benefit from incentives and avoid penalties as regulation tightens.

E-methane and production process

E-methane is uniquely positioned to meet new requirements and help organisations comply with the latest EU mandates for renewable fuels.

E-methane is an RFNBO fuel produced by combining renewable electricity with captured biogenic CO₂. The result is a fully renewable gas that can be injected into Europe’s existing gas grids and used by current customers in transport, industry and shipping. Because e-methane fits existing infrastructure, it avoids the need for new pipelines, storage or end-user equipment. This makes switching to RFNBO-compliant fuel faster, less risky and more cost-effective than many alternatives.

By choosing e-methane, organisations can meet strict RFNBO requirements, benefit from incentives and avoid penalties. Its scalability, proven technology and immediate usability give companies a clear competitive edge in the green transition.

Ren-Gas Process

The value-chain shows the e-methane production process: renewable electricity and biogenic CO₂ are converted into e-methane, with several valuable outputs generated along the way. In addition to e-methane itself, the process produces district heat, ancillary grid services, and oxygen, maximising resource efficiency and supporting sector integration. These outputs support local energy systems, improve efficiency and strengthen the business case for each project.

Finland is the right location

Finland offers a uniquely advantageous environment for efficient and scalable e-methane production.

It combines low-cost green electricity, abundant biogenic CO₂ and a stable power grid, making it an ideal location for large-scale e-methane production. The country’s ambitious 2035 carbon neutrality target and predictable regulatory environment give long-term visibility for investors and offtakers.

Strong logistics and a direct gas pipeline to continental Europe mean Finnish e-methane can be delivered efficiently to key markets. Finland’s skilled workforce and experience in energy, technology and process industries further reduce project risk and support fast, reliable implementation.

By locating production in Finland, Ren-Gas can offer competitive pricing, high reliability and a strong sustainability profile for European customers.

Ren-Gas approach

Ren-Gas is focused on delivering bankable, large-scale e-methane for European gas offtakers. Our decentralised projects in Finland use affordable green electricity and biogenic CO₂ to produce RFNBO-certified gas that meets demanding regulatory and market requirements.

We work with leading technology suppliers, investors and public funders, including support from the EU Innovation Fund and the European Investment Bank. This combination of technical strength and financial backing allows us to offer flexible, long-term contracts and delivery to both the Finnish national gas grid and European virtual trading hubs.

With several TWh of annual renewable fuel output, Ren-Gas is positioned as a reliable, scalable partner for long-term decarbonisation.

Ren-Gas’s proprietary SIMO platform enables advanced modelling and optimisation of the entire e-methane value chain, ensuring projects are bankable and technically robust before construction.

Once operational, Ren-Gas’s OMO (Operations, Maintenance and Optimisation) approach uses centralised, automated control to maximise efficiency, safety, and market responsiveness across all plants.

Together, SIMO and OMO provide Ren-Gas with a unique capability to develop, operate, and optimise e-methane projects reliably and competitively for the future.
