Sweco to Design Ren-Gas’s Renewable E-Methane Production Plant in Tampere
Sweco will design Ren-Gas’s e-methane production plant, which will be built near the Tarastenjärvi power plant, northeast of Tampere. The location allows for the delivery of carbon dioxide from a nearby power plant, and the integration of district heating for the utilization of waste heat. The plant has been granted a valid environmental permit, and the construction of the project is scheduled for 2025–2027. Upon completion, the Tampere production plant will produce renewable fuel for approximately 600 heavy vehicles and a significant amount of renewable district heating for the residents of Tampere.
“Ren-Gas’s e-methane production plant in Tampere will be a significant milestone in implementing green transition investments in Finland. Ren-Gas will build several e-methane production plants in Finland in the coming years, so the safety and modularity of the plant concept will be the cornerstones of the design. We appreciate Sweco’s expertise in the hydrogen sector and the company’s extensive and skilled resources, which will support the implementation of Ren-Gas’s production portfolio,” says Saara Kujala, CEO of Ren-Gas.
“We are excited to be involved in designing a new type of e-methane production plant in Tampere that utilizes carbon capture and utilization methods. These are crucial in reducing industrial emissions. It is great that our hydrogen expertise is trusted, and we are part of implementing Ren-Gas’s ambitious goal of building a production network,” says Tuomas Salminen, Head of Industry and Energy at Sweco.

Nordic Ren-Gas Oy is Finland’s leading hydrogen economy project developer, building a decentralized renewable e-methane production network in Finland. The renewable fuels produced by Ren-Gas will reduce the use of fossil fuels in heavy road transport and maritime transport by approximately 250 million liters per year. The resulting clean fuel can reduce over one million tons of carbon dioxide per year in the transport and energy sectors. Ren-Gas sources Finnish wind power as the energy source for the produced e-methane.
