Ren-Gas selects Saipem for post combustion carbon capture at Tampere e-methane plant

Saipem will supply its industrialized solution “Bluenzyme™“ for the carbon capture unit of Ren-Gas e-methane plant in Tampere. The plant will utilize 40,000 tonnes per year of captured biogenic CO2 in the e-methane production

Ren-Gas is thrilled to announce its collaboration with Saipem as a key technology provider for the Tampere Power-to-Gas project using its industrialized solution “Bluenzyme™“ for the carbon capture unit of the plant, showcasing Saipem’s innovative enzymatic technology for capturing carbon dioxide in industrial processes. This collaboration marks a significant milestone as it introduces the first industrial-scale post combustion carbon capture plant in Finland.

Saipem has the expertise to develop the design, procurement, fabrication, and assistance to installation, commissioning, startup, and performance testing of the carbon capture unit. This comprehensive approach ensures that the project benefits from Saipem’s state-of-the-art technology and expertise at every stage, from initial design to final performance validation.

Bluenzyme™ is Saipem’s innovative plug-and-play solution for carbon capture which involves the use of enzymes, thus reducing the operational complexity for hard-to-abate industrial sectors. The solution is applied to post-combustion emissions from new or existing plants. The technology behind Bluenzyme™, which was nominated as the Energy Transition Changemaker at COP28, is already in use in Saint-Félicien, Canada.

We are delighted to announce our collaboration with Saipem, a company renowned for its exceptional reputation in the field of the energy transition. Our long-standing cooperation with Saipem has been instrumental in advancing our shared goals of sustainability and innovation. This collaboration exemplifies European industry cooperation and our mutual dedication to advancing the carbon capture sector,” said Mikko Piekkala, Commercial Manager, Ren-Gas.

Ren-Gas’s Tampere facility is set to produce renewable e-methane for heavy road and maritime transport. The e-methane production process will utilize approximately 40,000 tons of carbon dioxide captured annually from the Tarastenjärvi waste incineration plant’s flue gases. The plant will generate approximately 200 GWh of renewable fuel for heavy road and maritime transport annually, as well as 180 GWh of carbon dioxide-free district heating for Tampere’s district heating system.

Ren-Gas is Finland’s leading green hydrogen and e-methane project developer, having secured significant public support for its portfolio from the Finnish Government and the EU. The company has developed an industry benchmark project portfolio, with the Tampere facility set to begin construction in 2025 and commence commercial operations in 2027.
