Ren-Gas Secures Renewable Electricity for Tampere E-Methane Plant through H2PPA Portfolio

Nordic Ren-Gas has signed long-term Hydrogen Power Purchase Agreements (H2PPAs) with Helen and another renewable electricity supplier for its industrial-scale e-methane production plant in Tampere, Finland. The agreements complete a diversified renewable electricity portfolio for the project and mark an important step toward its final investment decision.

The agreements cover physical electricity deliveries and the corresponding Guarantees of Origin needed for the production of renewable hydrogen and renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO). The portfolio supports reliable, cost-competitive and RFNBO-compliant e-methane production.

A Flexible H2PPA for RFNBO Production

Unlike a conventional corporate PPA, Ren-Gas’s H2PPA is tailored to the operational and regulatory requirements of renewable hydrogen production. It combines physical renewable electricity, Guarantees of Origin, RFNBO compliance, balancing and verification within one contractual framework.

The structure allows the Tampere plant to adjust its electricity consumption and hydrogen production in response to renewable electricity availability and market conditions. Sourcing from two suppliers improves diversification and supports efficient operation in a changing electricity market.

The H2PPA structure and the plant’s flexible operation also support the electricity system by allowing consumption to respond to renewable generation and market conditions. By increasing production when renewable electricity is abundant and reducing consumption during tighter periods, the plant helps balance the system and supports the efficient integration of variable renewable energy.

“The agreement demonstrates how renewable electricity can enable industrial-scale hydrogen and e-methane production. Flexibility is a key success factor for this project, allowing production to respond to variations in renewable power availability and market conditions.  As renewable electricity generation continues to grow, flexible energy-intensive facilities play an increasingly important role in balancing the wider energy system and supporting efficient use of clean electricity. We are pleased to support Ren-Gas in advancing an important Finnish industrial project.”

— Tuukka Hartikka, VP, Power Generation, Helen

“Our H2PPA model goes beyond securing renewable electricity. It brings physical supply, RFNBO compliance and flexible plant operation into one bankable framework, enabling Finnish renewable power to be converted into renewable fuel for transport and industry. These agreements complete a diversified electricity portfolio for Tampere and mark an important step toward the project’s final investment decision.”

Renewable Electricity for an Integrated E-Methane Value Chain

The Tampere Power-to-Gas plant will use renewable electricity to produce renewable hydrogen, which will be combined with captured biogenic carbon dioxide to produce renewable e-methane. The plant is designed to operate flexibly in line with renewable electricity availability while meeting stringent RFNBO requirements.

The H2PPAs complement Ren-Gas’s long-term e-methane offtake, technology and project-financing arrangements for Tampere. Together, these agreements connect competitive Finnish renewable electricity with flexible production and a route to market, creating an integrated European value chain for renewable e-methane.
